Article Title: | Immunity to fungi |
Abstract: | Innate and adaptive immune responses target pathogenic fungi and provide defense against fungal infections. Recent studies demonstrate that specific host receptors recognize ligands that are unique to fungi and activate signaling cascades that lead to phagocytosis of fungi, generation of pro-inflammatory mediators, formation of reactive oxygen species, trafficking of inflammatory cells to sites of infection, and initiation of adaptive immune responses. Greater understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie antifungal defense has provided a framework for the investigation of protective vaccines and strategies for therapeutic adoptive cell transfer. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
