Article Title: Acute respiratory failure in critically ill patients with cancer: Diagnosis and management
Abstract: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) remains the most common underlying diagnosis in patients with cancer requiring admission to the ICU. The cancer patient with ARF often presents a difficult differential diagnostic. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of the most common etiologies of ARF in patients with cancer, including the newer approaches to ventilator management of patients with acute lung injury. Additionally, prognostic information and outcome data are provided to guide oncology and critical care practitioners in caring for patients with cancer who have ARF that requires mechanical ventilation.
