Article/Chapter Title: Sarcopenia and frailty in lung cancer
Abstract: Sarcopenia can be defined as the decline of muscle mass and muscle function. Frailty is a multidimensional syndrome leading to increased vulnerability to stressors and functional decline. Sarcopenia and frailty are highly prevalent in lung cancer patients. These conditions have demonstrated associations with increased postoperative complications, increased toxicity to chemotherapeutics, and decreased overall survival. There is currently no consensus on the standard of care, but various interventions such as exercise programs, protein supplementation, and medications are being studied. Cancer rehabilitation physicians are well positioned to both diagnose these conditions and lead the treatment teams needed to combat them. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
