Abstract: |
Comments that although the precise prevalence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated dementia is uncertain, autopsies revealed that brains from nearly two-thirds of AIDS patients showed evidence of premortem dementing process. The early symptoms of AIDS dementia are commonly attributed to reactive depression or misconstrued as concomitants of systemic illness; later there is development of moderate to severe global cognitive dysfunction (within 3 mo) and at the last stage there are clear motor abnormalities. The diagnosis, neuropathology, etiology and pathogenesis of AIDS dementia and also AIDS encephalopathy in children are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) |
