Article Title: Epidemiology of invasive candidiasis: Recent progress and current controversies
Abstract: This report examines recent areas of progress and discusses topics of ongoing controversy in the epidemiology of invasive candidiasis. Pertinent literature regarding major advances in the field is reviewed. The discussion focuses on progress in the understanding of Candida species transmission, host risk factors important for invasive disease and potential changes in the pathogenicity of Candida species that have led to non-albicans organisms supplanting Candida albicans as the major colonizer and cause of invasive disease. Substantial progress has been made in the understanding of the epidemiology of invasive candidiasis. However, the field faces challenges and questions that require further study.
