Abstract: |
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma has a high propensity for local and regional invasion, leading to many patients presenting with an advanced stage of disease. Despite this, medical and scientific communities have made large strides towards improving and refining the ability to treat this disease, even in these advanced cases. The advent of intensity- modulated radiation therapy allows for conformal delivery of radiation, minimizing toxicity to normal tissue, while maximizing dose delivery to disease-involved areas. Further strides in treating nasopharyngeal cancer and prolonging patient survival have taken place with the addition of chemotherapy to the treatment of locally advanced disease. This chapter will briefly cover the general anatomic spread of advanced local and regional nasopharyngeal carcinoma, with a substantial focus on the role of chemoradiotherapy in the treatment of advanced stage disease. Sequelae of treatment and the impact on the quality of life of patients will also be discussed. © 2014 Future Medicine Ltd. All rights reserved. |
