Article/Chapter Title: Postoperative management and preoperative considerations: Urinary incontinence and anastomotic structure
Abstract: Urinary adverse events after radical prostatectomy, particularly urinary incontinence and formation of an anastomotic stricture, are bothersome and can lead to significant decrease in quality of life (Walsh et al., J Urol 152:1831–6, 1994; Catalona and Basler, J Urol 150:905–7, 1993; Potosky et al., J Natl Cancer Inst 96:1358–67, 2004;Stothers et al., Urinary incontinence in men. In: Litwin MS, Saigal CS, editors. Urologic diseases in America. US Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Washington DC: US Government Publishing Office, NIH Publication No. 07-5512, pp 193–222, 2007; Wei et al., J Urol 164:744–8, 2000). In addition to having knowledge of standard treatment options for these maladies, it is important to understand the risk factors for development of persistent urinary incontinence and anastomotic stricture. The natural history of recovery of urinary function is extremely important in determining when intervention is needed. In this chapter, we review preoperative evaluation, risk factors, and management of voiding dysfunction—urinary incontinence and anastomotic strictures—after radical prostatectomy. © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2014.
