Article Title: Skin cancer in the elderly
Abstract: The segment of the US population over the age of 65 years is growing. These individuals often develop cancers of the skin, and a disproportionately high percentage of these patients succumb to their cancer. Greater efforts need to be made to educate seniors on the danger signs of skin cancer. Once a diagnosis of skin cancer is made, it is important to identify the best possible treatment option for each individual patient. Many aspects need to be considered in deciding on therapy, including the age of the patient, concomitant medical problems, mental status, long-term prognosis, and patient wishes. The patients' ability to understand and exercise appropriate wound care also needs to be considered. The eventual treatment chosen should have acceptable cure rates and low complication rates and should be convenient for our elderly patients.
