Abstract: In a ground breaking series of experiments in 1976, Stehelin, Varmus, Vogt and Bishop provided evidence for the transduction of cellular genes, i.e. proto-oncogenes, by retroviruses and thus proof for the proto-oncogene hypothesis. Subsequently, oncogenes were identified in viruses isolated from several different species and it became clear that oncogenes found in acute transforming retroviruses were not restricted to the species from which the virus was isolated but that homologous oncogenes were identified in viruses isolated from different species. Therefore, oncogene containing acute transforming retroviruses became an invaluable source for the identification of a large number of viral oncogenes and their normal cellular counterparts the proto-oncogenes. As proto-oncogenes promised to have critical roles in controlling cell growth in the normal organisms and in neoplasia, the identification and characterization of new oncogenes in acute transforming retroviruses was highly significant.
