Article/Chapter Title: | Bipolar disorder |
Abstract: | (from the chapter) Bipolar disorder is a severely disabling and recurrent condition. While its genetic etiology has been recognized, it has also been shown to be responsive to psychosocial treatment. For example, research has documented the benefits of psychotherapy for bipolar depression even after antidepressant medications and mood stabilizers did not provide relief. In this chapter, the authors review current knowledge about the phenomenology and etiology, as well as the pharmacological and social interventions that have received empirical support in the treatment of bipolar disorder.
