Article/Chapter Title: Psychiatric management of eating disorders in palliative-care management of cancer patients
Abstract: (from the chapter) In this chapter, the physiological etiology of decreased or insufficient nutritional intake, the psychological mechanisms of cancer anorexia, and various currently used pharmacological, behavioral, and educational interventions are discussed. It is noted that often psychological causes of cancer anorexia involve anxiety about the disease, depression, anticipatory phenomena, and learned food aversions, as well as pre-existing psychiatric disorders. Optimal management involves the use of a combination of psychotherapeutic, behavioral and pharmacological treatments, supplemented by education, counseling, and support.
