Article/Chapter Title: Functional MRI
Abstract: Functional MRI (fMRI) allows non-invasive indirect measurement of neuronal activity and imaging of activated cortical areas. Measurements are based on the fact that brain stimulation is correlated with an increased local brain metabolism. This metabolic activity causes local changes of the magnetic properties of blood, which can be imaged by fMRI due to a hemodynamic effect (changes in blood flow and blood volume).
