Article/Chapter Title: | Surgical margins in soft tissue sarcoma |
Abstract: | This chapter presents a case scenario of a 48-year-old woman who has had a 6 cm mass in the anterior compartment of the leg for about three months. A balance between adequate surgical margins and preservation of important anatomical structures is required for optimal patient outcomes. Oncologically sufficient surgical excision of soft tissue sarcomas (STS) remains indispensable for the cure of patients. Surgical margins were associated with local recurrence-free survival in localized STS of the extremity. Radiation therapy is used to facilitate local control in multidisciplinary treatment of STS. Local management of extremity STS consists of surgery combined with adjuvant treatment modalities in a multidisciplinary setting. The impact of surgical margin on outcome varies depending on the histological subtype of the STS. Margin assessment of different types of sarcoma is difficult to evaluate. The chapter provides recommendations for implementing evidence-based practice in the clinical setting. © 2021 John Wiley and Sons Ltd. Published 2021 by John Wiley and Sons Ltd. |
