Article Title: | Role of surgery in the multidisciplinary treatment of extremity soft tissue sarcomas |
Abstract: | Surgical resection with adequate margins represents the mainstay of treatment for extremity soft tissue sarcoma. The surgeon should coordinate a multidisciplinary team that includes a pathologist, radiation oncologist, medical oncologist, and rehabilitation medicine physician. Adjuvant radiation improves local control, and amputation is rarely necessary. Chemotherapy is unproven but should be considered in an investigational setting for patients with large (>10 cm) tumors that are associated with a high risk of distant metastases. Future improvement in outcome will likely depend on the development of more effective adjuvant pharmacologic and biologic strategies to complement surgical resection. |
