The diagnosis and treatment of salivary gland tumors have presented a challenge to head and neck surgeons for several reasons: they occur relatively infrequently, they present in diverse locations, and they show great variation in clinical presentation and histologic appearance. Salivary neoplasms can arise in the major or paired glands (parotid, submandibular, sublingual) or in one of the hundreds of predominantly mucus-secreting glands within the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract (the so-called minor salivary glands). |
