Abstract: |
In 2009, emergence of a new influenza A strain of swine origin resulted in the first influenza pandemic since 1968. The virus, termed 2009 H1N1 influenza, was found to have unique virological and clinical characteristics. Among patients with cancer or hematopoietic stem cell transplant, 2009 H1N1 influenza is associated with a high frequency of lower respiratory tract involvement and hospitalization, and can result in severe outcomes. Neuraminidase inhibitors are the treatment of choice, although cases of oseltamivir resistance are increasingly being reported. Prevention is crucial, and can be achieved through a combination of infection control, vaccination and use of chemoprophylaxis. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2012. |
