Abstract: |
Reviews the book, Cognition and Cancer edited by Christina A. Meyers and James R. Perry (see record 2009-03271-000). This book set out to provide a practical handbook that reviews both empirical evidence for sources of cancer and cancer treatment-related cognitive decline and current methods of assessment and intervention for this condition. The book does not disappoint, delivering well-organized chapters with in-depth coverage of the physiological and treatment-related mechanisms for cognitive decline in patients, in conjunction with a basic overview of neuropsychological assessment methods and evidence based recommendations for clinical diagnosis, management, and treatment. The book does provide a general overview of the process of neuropsychological assessment, but a referring clinician may have additionally benefited from a table describing common neuropsychological tests to serve as a quick reference guide and aid in the interpretation of neuropsychological reports for long-term patient care. Overall, the book succeeds in serving as a single resource for clinicians who work regularly with cancer patients reporting cognitive decline related to cancer and its treatment.
