Article/Chapter Title: A perspective on breast cancer malignant progression: From cancer stem cell intra tumor heterogeneity to metastasis-initiating cells
Abstract: Breast cancer contains a hierarchy of distinct cancer cells. Accordingly, some cancer cells are more tumorigenic than others. These cells, called cancer stem cells (CSC), promote different aspects of tumorigenesis from chemoresistance to self-renewing potential. However, tumors also show high intra-/inter-tumoral heterogeneity, suggesting that multiple cell types might support tumor growth. Therefore, we may hypothesize that distinct CSCs operate in the process of tumorigenesis. © 2014 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All rights reserved.
