Abstract: |
Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) describes a subset of adenocarcinoma of the lung commonly characterized by a distinct clinical presentation, natural history, radiographic appearances, response to treatment, and molecular biology. Recently, interest in BAC has increased because of newer targeted therapies, which have shown greater efficacy in this patient population than in other patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the identification of mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene in nearly one-third of patients. In this chapter, we review the current understanding of the biology, pathology, radiology, and treatment of BAC. We also discuss current research directions and future options for treatment. © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. |
