(create) This chapter begins with an introduction discussing the history of chemotherapy. Basic principles of cancer cells and chemotherapy are presented next, followed by unique aspects limiting chemotherapy in brain tumors. These include the blood-brain barrier, drug resistance, and drug interactions. Then, specific chemotherapeutic agents are discussed, including alkylating agents, plant alkaloids, antimetabolites, camptothecins, anthracyclines, and other agents. The chapter concludes with a discussion of supportive care, including antiemetic therapy, colony-stimulating factors, diarrhea and constipation, and fertility preservation.
