Article/Chapter Title: Cytoreductive surgery: Right upper abdomen—Liver, gallbladder, and porta hepatis
Abstract: Advanced stages of ovarian cancer frequently involve right upper quadrant abdominal structures, including the liver, gallbladder, and hepatoduodenal ligament. The retroperitoneal structures that may be encountered during cytoreduction for ovarian cancer in the right upper abdomen include the second and third portions of the duodenum, ascending colon, pancreas, right kidney and adrenal gland, inferior vena cava, and aorta. The liver is the largest solid organ in the body and occupies the majority of the right upper abdomen. The porta hepatis or porta contains three important structures: the portal vein, proper hepatic artery, and hepatic/common bile duct. The right hepatic vein most often remains as a separate structure throughout its course, whereas the middle and left hepatic veins commonly join together for a short segment before emptying into the inferior vena cava via a common trunk. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
