Article/Chapter Title: Cancer caregivers
Abstract: The impact of cancer extends beyond the patient to family, friends, and community members who often serve as informal caregivers and assist with the patient's cancer experience in a variety of ways. Increased cancer prevalence and shifts to outpatient cancer care have resulted in additional burden on informal caregivers. Exact definitions vary, but an informal cancer caregiver is herein defined as any individual who provides uncompensated care and support to a person with cancer with significant time and energy costs. The numerous responsibilities placed on cancer caregivers are linked to an enormous psychological and physical health burden. Caregivers' poor health outcomes are associated with their own healthcare costs, as well as with difficulty with providing patient care and subsequent risk to the patient. This chapter describes the prevalence and characteristics of cancer caregivers; the developmental, social and cultural context which shapes the caregiving experience; and the burden of caregiving on physical and psychological health outcomes. It describes current empirically supported interventions designed to address the unique needs of cancer caregivers and implications for clinical practice and policy to improve caregiver and patient health outcomes.
