Article/Chapter Title: Cognitive behavioral therapy for informal cancer caregivers: A review of the literature and future directions
Abstract: The experience of providing care to a loved one with cancer is associated with significant psychological, physical, temporal, and financial burden. A growing number of interventions have been developed to address the psychological component of burden among informal cancer caregivers (ICs), of which cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs) have shown particularly promising results. No overall synthesis of CBTs for ICs exists, and the present chapter therefore provides a systematic review of previous studies of CBTs for ICs, their target outcomes, therapeutic components, and effects. We conclude that although our knowledge of the burden experienced by caregivers has increased over the past decade, this knowledge has not yet been sufficiently translated into effective interventions for caregivers. Informed by recent advances in the affective sciences, this chapter presents emotion regulation as an important target for future interventions. We argue that the distress experienced by ICs can be conceptualized as products of maladaptive regulation of the motivational and emotional conflicts associated with providing care. Based on this model, recommendations for future CBT interventions are provided. © 2014 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
