Article/Chapter Title: Communicating with patients with advanced cancer
Abstract: Communication between patients, their families, and the healthcare team is a foundation for providing optimal cancer care. Identifying, assessing, and addressing the communication experiences, needs, and goals of patients with any type or stage of cancer is critical. As cancer progresses, what patients want and need from their healthcare team may change. Patients with advanced cancer have diverse and complex physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Communicating effectively with patients who have advanced cancer is a challenge for many healthcare professionals. As a general rule, when faced with advanced cancer, patients need information to help them understand their illness and plan for their future. In addition to information, many patients also turn to their healthcare team for guidance and support. This chapter describes the communication needs and challenges of patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers and suggests strategies to communicate effectively about these complex issues. The communication needs of patients with cancer change over the course of the cancer trajectory. Patients with advanced cancer and their informal caregivers have a variety of needs during their illness, many of which go unmet. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
