Article/Chapter Title: Caring for the family caregiver of cancer patients
Abstract: Caregivers of patients with chronic acute, or life-limiting illness have been described as "isolated, invisible, and in need". This chapter provides an overview of the experience of caregivers, and interventions that can be implemented at various points throughout the trajectory of the illness. Caregivers are often called upon to understand complex medication regimens, contact 'hard to reach' medical providers, navigate a difficult health and legal system, advocate for services, negotiate with insurance companies, and/or manage the household, finances, and children. The needs of caregivers are often overlooked by healthcare providers, friends, and family members in the face of the complex needs of the person with cancer. To infuse a systematic, formal assessment of caregivers of cancer patients into practice, education needs to be considered for all oncology providers. Although most research on caregiver interventions find them effective, very few interventions have been implemented in practice because they were not initially designed for the realities and cost restrictions of the practice setting. Categories of interventions that might benefit caregivers are vast with those often recommended for practice including cognitive behavioral therapy or elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, psycho-education, or general supportive care.
