Nipple-sparing mastectomy represents a further refinement of preservation of the native skin envelope of the breast and is applicable in both therapeutic and risk-reduction cases requiring mastectomy. This chapter reviews current strategies for patient selection and operative technique, and discusses recent outcomes data for early postoperative complications, including nipple loss as well as oncological safety. While long-term follow-up data are so far scarce, outcomes from large institutional cohorts continue to emerge with encouragingly low rates of recurrence in the conserved nipple-areola. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2013, 2019 |
