Article/Chapter Title: Breast reconstruction
Abstract: Since the introduction of modern breast reconstruction techniques in the 1960s, these procedures have continued to evolve with improved esthetic outcomes, decreased morbidity, and improved patient experience. Reconstruction using autologous tissues or implants provides an option for virtually all patients to have breast reconstruction. These techniques require careful planning and individual attention to detail to match the best reconstructive options with a patient’s oncological, medical, social, and physical conditions. In this chapter, we aim to outline the history, indications, surgical technique, and outcomes of the most common types of breast reconstructive techniques. While our goal is to provide an overview of these techniques, we recognize that an encyclopedic description of these procedures is beyond the scope of a single chapter. As a result, we have provided ample references, and the interested reader is encouraged to review the source documents for additional details. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
