Article Title: The spontaneous transformation of benign into malignant soft tissue tumors (with emphasis on extraskeletal osseous, lipomatous, and schwannian lesions
Abstract: This study reviews the evidence, or the lack of it, as to whether some benign soft tissue neoplasms are truly precancerous and analyzes the already reported cases as to their acceptability in view of current knowledge. It finds that some examples of myositis ossificans, occasional lipomatous tumors, and very rare solitary schwannomas do indeed spontaneously become malignant but not in a meaningful, predictable way. These are extremely rare pathologic curiosities and the practicing pathologist should not become unduly worried.
