Anesthesia care is critical to successful aesthetic orthognathic surgery and rhinoplasty. Surgeons and anesthesia providers have specific concerns and goals relevant to their roles in caring for the patient undergoing orthognathic surgery. Though many of their objectives are mutual, others may conflict. In order to ensure the best care and outcomes, communication between the surgical and anesthetic staff is crucial. A discussion involving the shared airway, hemodynamic parameters (e.g. permissive hypotension and sitting position), postoperative nausea and vomiting, pain, and other issues deserve preoperative discussion and planning with all caregiving parties. Planning begins with early assessment of the patient at the surgeon’s clinic, followed by a thorough preoperative evaluation by an anesthesia provider. Communication of specific surgical concerns and awareness of issues that may be encountered by the anesthesia provider facilitate planning for patient management and reduce the risk for complications. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. |
