Abstract: It is the purpose of this article to demonstrate that the identification and definition of an HLA genotypically identical donor/recipient combination required extensive serological, biochemical, molecular genetic and cellular analyses if stringent criteria for the definition are applied. Secondly, it will be described why the definition of HLA phenotypic identity among unrelated individuals might be a very rare occurrence.
