To the Editor: The report by Weiner et al. (Oct. 2 issue)1 on inhibition of atherosclerosis by cod-liver oil in hyperlipidemic swine is interesting but does not elaborate on the possible mechanisms involved. Although only one of the coronary arteries was abraded by balloon catheter, the authors stated that all three coronary arteries “had similar disease both qualitatively and quantitatively.” They concluded that the atherosclerosis observed was “not primarily a response to abrasion.” They further noted that although atherosclerosis has been shown to develop in other animal models in response to injury alone, it has not been shown in swine. © 1987, Massachusetts Medical Society.
