Abstract: |
Salivary neoplasms may arise in the paired major glands or in minor salivary glands. The distribution of these tumors, and the varying incidence of malignancy in different sites, is documented. The histologic classification of salivary neoplasms is also reviewed. Clinical staging is important, both for treatment planning and for assessing the prognosis for patients with malignant tumors. Surgical intervention remains the treatment of choice, and results vary according to the location, clinical stage, and histologic appearance of the primary tumor. Adjunctive radiation therapy, following an adequate operation, seems to enhance locoregional tumor control, particularly in patients with high-stage, high-grade malignant tumors. |
