Unfortunately, while ovarian carcinoma is one of the most chemotherapy-responsive human tumors, the vast majority of patients with advanced disease ultimately die of complications of the neoplasm. The intraperitoneal administration of chemotherapeutic drugs is an interesting technique which has been employed to increase response rates and, hopefully, survival in ovarian carcinoma. For the present, however, one must continue to state that this innovative approach remains in the investigative stages as it has yet to be shown that survival is prolonged for any subset of patients treated by the technique. Hopefully, within the next several years it will be possible to define a role for intraperitoneal chemotherapy in the standard management of ovarian carcinoma. |
