Article/Chapter Title: Toxic adenoma
Abstract: A solitary toxic adenoma is a benign thyroid tumor with autonomous thyroid hormone production. It is a common cause of hyperthyroidism in adults, with increased prevalence seen in regions with iodine deficiency. Most solitary toxic adenomas are caused by somatic mutations that activate the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor. Patients with solitary toxic adenoma may present with subclinical or overt hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism due to solitary toxic adenoma requires definitive treatment. Surgery and 131Iodine ablation represent the mainstays of definitive treatment. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
