Article/Chapter Title: Nontoxic goiter
Abstract: Nontoxic goiter is defined as a diffuse or nodular enlargement of the thyroid gland that is not associated with hyperthyroidism and that does not result from an autoimmune or inflammatory process. The most common cause of nontoxic goiter is iodine deficiency, however, sporadic goiters are seen in areas of iodine sufficiency. Patients with nontoxic goiter are often asymptomatic, but can present with symptoms of obstruction or findings of an enlarging neck mass. Treatment options include surveillance, thyroidectomy, and radioactive iodine. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
