Article/Chapter Title: Diabetes and men’s health
Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a common disease worldwide, and its prevalence is rising. The main causes of adult-onset diabetes are being overweight or obese and having a sedentary lifestyle. The complications of this disease are numerous and include effects on sexual function. The men’s health disorders most commonly associated with diabetes include erectile dysfunction (ED), hypogonadism, ejaculatory dysfunction such as anejaculation and retrograde ejaculation, and orgasmic dysfunction including delayed orgasm and anorgasmia. These disorders are more prevalent in diabetic men compared with nondiabetics and can be more difficult to manage. ED is often more severe in diabetic men, and therapy is less effective in this population. Additionally, poorly controlled diabetics are at an increased risk for penile implant infection. Diabetic neuropathy can lead to ejaculatory and orgasmic dysfunction that can be permanent. This chapter focuses on the pathophysiology of sexual dysfunction in diabetic men and treatment options. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
