Article/Chapter Title: Trauma and stress in the Islamic community before and after 9/11
Abstract: Lutheran Disaster Response of New York (LDRNY) was established after the tragedy at the World Trade Center. It funds mental health consultations through the Lutheran Counseling Center, and legal assistance and classes to immigrants, and it also offers respite to clergy and recovery workers. John Scibilia was in Chicago on September 11, 2001. He returned to New York City after the attacks, changing homes when he was appointed the first executive director of Lutheran Disaster Response of New York. Tom Taylor is a fire chaplain known as an advocate for interventional counseling and a pastoral facilitator using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is used to help disaster victims overcome emotional trauma and posttraumatic stress. Mikki Baloy was a receptionist on Wall Street in 2001. On September 11, Mikki could see papers falling from the sky and smoke from the fires a few blocks away. The lights flickered and the elevator hit the shaft as the building shook. © 2005 by The Haworth Press, Inc.
