Abstract: |
Reviews the book, Experimental Foundations of Behavioral Medicine: Conditioning Approaches edited by Robert Ader, Herbert Weiner, and Andrew Baum (see record 1988-98188-000). This is a collection of papers from the 1985 meetings of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research. Its aim is to demonstrate the fundamental role of conditioning processes in both the natural development and therapeutic reduction of disease symptoms. The text does have two limitations. First, due to no fault of the authors, the chapters are not current. Second, the chapters that address basic conditioning processes are narrow in focus and fail to consider possible theoretical and clinical implications. The most serious criticism of the text is tied to the timing of this review. The papers were delivered five years ago, and the material is, therefore, not current.
