To the Editor: Dr. Misbin (Oct. 31 issue)* refers to the assisted death of a patient with terminal illness as an intentional killing, and to the termination of dialysis in a patient with renal failure or the removal of a respirator from a patient who depends on mechanical ventilation as allowing the patient to die. Although he points out that a moral distinction between killing and allowing patients to die remains debatable, the author does not mention the crucial, intentional component of these acts. A medical cause of death does not make death from the withdrawal of treatment morally permissible... © 1992, Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved. |
