Article Title: Advances in the management of cancer pain
Abstract: Pain management is a compelling issue in the care of patients with cancer. Adequate pain relief allows the patient the greatest opportunity to live normally during the early stages of disease and to have an optimal quality of life as the cancer progresses. Effective symptom control also eases the burden on the family, who otherwise may experience helplessness as uncontrolled pain occurs in a loved one. Ongoing and careful assessment, a systematic approach to pharmacotherapy, and the judicious use of other approaches are fundamental elements of the successful management of cancer pain.
