Abstract: Pneumococcal disease, even when treated promptly with appropriate antibiotics, is associated with high mortality, particularly among patients with neoplastic disease. Prevention with the polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine is recommended in cancer patients, but vaccination continues to be underutilized.
