Abstract: |
Assessing fluid balance and deciding on appropriate fluid strategy is a daily requirement of the intensive care unit provider. Predicting volume responsiveness, determining the appropriate fluid to give, assessing response, and avoiding complications are essential in caring for the critically ill patient. This article reviews the history of fluid use and physiology and goals of resuscitation. Current literature regarding fluid management strategies is reviewed. A dynamic fluid resuscitation strategy is highlighted, integrating current ICU technology as well as the growing knowledge surrounding complications of fluid overload. © 2018 Elsevier Inc. |
