Abstract: |
Adverse effects of medications on the lungs are an increasing problem, given the rapidly growing number of drugs used for therapeutic and illicit purposes.1-5 In addition to a wide variety of clinical manifestations (Box 5.1),1 there is a broad spectrum of histologic patterns of pulmonary reactions to drugs (Box 5.2).2,6,7 The diagnosis of pulmonary drug toxicity is complicated because it requires multidisciplinary correlation between clinical, radiological, laboratory and - when available - pathology material.2,6,7 In the majority of pulmonary drug reactions the diagnosis is made using only clinical, laboratory and radiological features without a lung biopsy. In fact, fewer than 10 per cent of cases of drug-induced interstitial lung disease include histologic data.1. © 2010 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. |
