Abstract: |
Empiric therapy is standard care in the treatment of presumed infection in the immunocompromised patient, but empiric therapy is not a substitute for thorough evaluation or definitive treatment. Consideration of environmental influences, the patient's existing immune defects, and susceptibility patterns of likely pathogens will provide important clues to diagnosis and treatment. Among immune defects, neutrophilic and splenic defects are the most serious and the ones for which empiric therapy is the most important. |
