Abstract: |
Discusses how the psychological, social, ethical, and spiritual domains of cancer have begun to be explored actively in the past 20 yrs by small groups in cancer centers around the world. Psychotherapy and a range of psychotherapeutic, psychosocial, behavioral and psychoeducational interventions are effective for patients who are identified and treated. Much will depend on the future development of a cohort of individuals who are skilled in the area of psycho-oncology, who can lead units with cancer centers, interact with other disciplines and develop research studies which address the major issues, many of which arise out of new oncologic discoveries or treatment, such as DNA testing and its impact. There will need to be a continuing and growing effort to assure that patient-centered care which incorporates quality of life, supportive and palliative and spiritual dimensions is available in cancer.
