Article/Chapter Title: Basal cell carcinoma: Subtypes
Abstract: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human cancer. Its incidence has increased in the last decades by 3%–10% per year.1 BCC most commonly affects the Caucasian population, typically developing on sun-exposed areas of elderly individuals (30% of estimated risk in the lifetime, increasing over 55 years of age).2 Multiple BCCs may be observed in younger patients affected by genetic syndromes such as Gorlin-Goltz.3 Progression in deeper tissues and metastasis are exceptionally unfrequent, and in most cases the disease is limited to the skin.4 © 2017 by Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
