Describe sonographically abnormal solitary testicle in patients post orchiectomy and correlate with surgical/pathological findings. 30 patients post orchiectomy with abnormal testicular sonograms were retrospectively identified; ultrasound findings were described and in 18 cases correlated with surgical/pathological data. On ultrasound 15 (50%) patients had masses, 13 (43%) heterogeneous changes and 2 (7%) macrocalcifications. 18 patients underwent operation and testicular cancer was present in 13 (72%); seminoma (n = 9), mixed germ cell tumor (n = 3) and Sertoli cell tumor (n = 1). Of those with cancer in the solitary testicle; 10 had masses and 3 heterogeneous changes on ultrasound. Benign disease was present in 5 patients who had operation; scar (n = 4) and leydig cell hyperplasia (n = 1). Sonographically there were 2 masses and 3 heterogeneous changes. A sonographically abnormal solitary testicle is of clinical concern. Testicular cancer should be considered and can present as a mass or heterogeneous changes. |
