Article Title: | Small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type: Past, present, and future |
Abstract: | Small cell carcinomas of the ovary, hypercalcemic type, are exceptionally rare yet aggressive tumors, typically affecting young women in the second to third decades of life. Less than half of patients survive beyond 2 years of the diagnosis, even with early stage disease and aggressive multimodal therapy. Here, we present a case of small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type, occurring in a 19-year-old woman and review the historical aspects, clinical features, histopathology, treatment, recent molecular discoveries, and future therapeutic prospects in this rare tumor type. |
