Abstract: |
This chapter describes the prevalence and types of pain syndromes encountered in patients with HIV disease, and reviews the psychological and functional impact of pain, as well as the barriers to adequate pain treatment in this population. Principles of pain management, with particular emphasis on the management of pain in HIV-infected patients with a history of substance abuse, are outlined. An interdisciplinary pain management program for chronic pain is important to use with these patients and will be discussed. Other significant psychological variables involved in the management of pain with these patients will also be reviewed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) |
