Abstract: |
(from the chapter) While great strides have been made in the management of HIV/AIDS, it remains a complex disease with profound neuropsychiatric as well as psychosocial implications. For patients with a dual and sometimes triple diagnosis of medical, psychiatric, and substance use disorders, treatment would ideally occur in an integrated setting with medical specialists, nursing, and mental health providers. Such integrated settings have been developed in urban centers in the United States and elsewhere with large numbers of patients with HIV. When such settings are not available, we would recommend that patients with dual and triple diagnoses be managed at a minimum by HIV specialists.
